Create tension. Create drama. Eliminate characters so we can reinvest ourselves into the characters that are left alive, and give them important things to do aside from stand around waiting for Edo Zombies, Naruto and Sasuke to do something. But this can’t happen because the story is ending. So basically we are left with the revival of Naruto and Sasuke, Madara followed by Madara’s inevitable defeat. The only thing that remains a mystery anymore is Orochimaru’s role in everything. He is the one truly interesting thing left in this manga IMO.
